STEM Centered Learning
STEM-Centered Learning at Crestwood School
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through this approach, students learn core subject concepts and skills while exploring these subjects in a hands-on and engaging way. Our STEM program enhances academic performance, develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and equips students with the knowledge they need to succeed in the modern workforce. We believe that integrating STEM into our whole-school approach to learning is the most beneficial way for students to thrive. Rather than segregating STEM education into specific streams or academies, we offer STEM-centered learning to all students. Our goal is to give every student the opportunity to learn about technology and embrace their inner innovator. We want our students to see themselves as capable of changing the world and actively inventing solutions to the problems they care about. |
Thinking like a Scientist
| Our dedicated staff at Crestwood School encourage students to think like scientists. We help them develop the skills and attitudes required for rigorous scientific thinking. Through a focus on hands-on experiences and process-oriented learning, we support all students as they engage with the Alberta curriculum. We also explore Design Thinking Frameworks, which promote creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. By incorporating field studies, expert connections, robotics, coding, and other STEM activities, we encourage students to approach learning through problem-solving, innovation, creativity, and curiosity. |
STEM in All Areas of Learning
| Learning through STEM is not limited to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics alone. It teaches students to apply their STEM lens to all other areas of learning, including math, English language arts, social studies, physical education, and wellness. We are committed to embedding Indigenous thinking in our STEM program. By consulting with experts in our community and applying an FNMI (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) lens, we integrate higher-level concepts and include Indigenous teachings, arts, dance, and song. Our approach is anchored in the Circle of Courage, connecting generosity, belonging, mastery, and independence to learning both in and through STEM. |
Education in Medicine Hat
| Crestwood School is proud to be a part of the Medicine Hat community. Our educational programs add a layer of value to the already high quality of life in this city. We offer safe, diverse, enriched, and progressive learning opportunities to our students. By looking at education through a STEM lens, we aim to build a diverse skill set in our students. This prepares them to become adaptable and versatile learners who can thrive in a complex and competitive economy. Our goal is to nurture engaged and active citizens who contribute to our society. |
Community Building and Choice
We strongly believe in community involvement and the power of real-world experiences. By integrating the work of local organizations, we provide our students with hands-on learning opportunities that connect them to their community. Through community involvement, we increase access to learning, boost student retention, promote optimism among staff, and improve overall student success. This collaboration helps us build a collective identity and foster a sense of purpose among our students. Additionally, offering choices for your child's education is important to us. We have listened to feedback from families who value STEM education, and we are committed to providing adaptable skills such as creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, empathy, and communication. Our students are encouraged to question, challenge assumptions, engage with the world, and become lifelong learners and active citizens. |
Inclusive and Affordable
| Our programs at Crestwood School are inclusive, and any student is welcome to apply for registration, regardless of their skill or ability. In the 2024-2025 academic year, there is no cost. We continue to ensure that we secure sponsorships to help cover program costs and keep any required fees minimal. We believe that cost should not be a barrier for families who want their child to access this exceptional program. |
We are excited offer discovery, growth, and learning together.
